ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF NORTON

This document presents Garrow & Associates' archaeological assessment for Wise County , Virginia, including the incorporated City of Norton and the incorporated towns of Appalachia, Big Stone Gap, Coeburn, Pound, St. Paul, and Wise. It is a review of the existing archaeological resource database for the county and documents a full range of sites ranging from 8,000 year old Native American camp sites to historic iron mines abandoned in the early twentieth century. This report was developed as a first attempt to synthesize and summarize what is currently known about the archaeology of the county. It is intended for use by other researchers and planners in the evaluation of resource significance and in the identification of preservation planning priorities. It can also be used by interested residents as an educational reference and a key to resource types representative of a given period or theme.
