This book is designed to both acquaint one with Indian lore and provide usable recipes for enjoyment of Indian foods and medicines. It is a treasury of food legends, recipes and herb uses from many Native American tribes.

This is an in-depth look at the history and techniques used in making the arts and crafts of the Eastern Band of Cherokees. The text is accompanied by dozens of photographs showing artisans and their crafts. Crafts include Basketry, Pottery, Wood Crafts, Weaving, Stone Crafts, Beads and Shells, Metal Crafts, Weapon Making, and Leather Works.

Much has been written about the Cherokee Nation and the "Trail of Tears", a phrase conveying the suffering that attended the forced removal of thousands of Cherokee Indians to present-day Oklahoma in the 1830s. But until recently historians have largely ignored the tribal remnant that avoided removal and remained in North Carolina. John R. Even so, economic opportunities and vagaries have made the band more intent on preserving its Cherokee identify. Finger also considers how changing federal Indian policies, as well as local circumstances, have propelled the Eastern Band toward greater self-determination. Based on extensive archival research, interviews with Cherokees, and a variety of anthropological sources, "Cherokee Americans" is a comprehensive account of an important and highly visible Indian tribe as it approaches the 21st century.

A modern medicine man portrayed through the words of the people he has helped Robert J. Conley did not set out to chronicle the life of Cherokee medicine man John Little Bear. Instead, the medicine man came to him. Little Bear asked Conley to write down his story, to reveal to the world “what Indian medicine is really about.” For Little Bear, as for the Cherokee ancestors who brought their traditions over the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory, the medicine is about helping people. Visitors from neighboring states and Mexico come to him, each one seeking help for a different kind of problem. Each seeker’s story is presented here exactly as it was told to Conley. Little Bear has cured problems involving health, relationships, and money by uncovering the source of the problem rather than simply treating the symptoms. From the time they established formal ties with Great Britain in 1730, the Cherokees had a rocky relationship with whites. They found grounds for dispute over trade practices, territorial control, and the complicated loyalties among the various Indian tribes and European powers. Over the years, the Cherokees struggled to maintain their ancient traditions as the tribe was assimilated into the white man's culture. Cherokee Voices uses the participants own words to tell the story of early Cherokee life. The selections were gathered from journals, treaty records, and correspondence written by Cherokees or by Europeans or Americans who knew them. The excerpts begin with the 1730 visit of Alexander Cuming, who appointed an emperor for the Cherokees. Touching on matters as varied as the Cherokees oral tradition, their village life, their ball games, their treaties with whites, their famous Cherokee Phoenix newspaper, and their education in Christian mission schools, the chapters take readers from when the Indians were dependent on European trade to when they became self-sufficient farmers and tradesmen. Unlike most books about the Cherokees, written in the third person by authors who lived years after the events, this one recognizes that no one can speak more eloquently of their lives, trials, and customs than the people themselves.

Focusing on Cherokee folklore, history, and tradition, each chapter of this fast-moving novel begins with the retelling of an authentic Cherokee legend that is then woven into the adventures of Dancing Leaf, a character based on the unnamed, adopted daughter of Cherokee Chieftainess Nancy Ward. Fascinating regional history comes through in references to locales of significance to the Cherokee during the 1820's and characters who represent important figures of the era such as Five Killer and Longfellow.
