This document presents the results of Phase III data recovery at Site 44ws115 in Wise County, Virginia as part of the Route 58 Coeburn Bypass Project. Conducted by The College of William and Mary Center for Archaeological Research (WMCAR) in accordance with an agreement with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), for further investigation or avoidance due to the perceived integrity and scarcity of precious research on such small sites. Carried out under the general supervision of Dennis B. Blanton, with Stevan C. Pullins serving as project Archaeologist, the project resulted in the recovery of 8,208 prehistoric artifacts.

This document presents Garrow & Associates' archaeological assessment for Wise County , Virginia, including the incorporated City of Norton and the incorporated towns of Appalachia, Big Stone Gap, Coeburn, Pound, St. Paul, and Wise. It is a review of the existing archaeological resource database for the county and documents a full range of sites ranging from 8,000 year old Native American camp sites to historic iron mines abandoned in the early twentieth century. This report was developed as a first attempt to synthesize and summarize what is currently known about the archaeology of the county. It is intended for use by other researchers and planners in the evaluation of resource significance and in the identification of preservation planning priorities. It can also be used by interested residents as an educational reference and a key to resource types representative of a given period or theme.
