Recollections of a Kentucky Mountain School 1920-1964

This is a copy of the original document the late Russell Greear found in the old Hillman home located in Flatwoods south of Coeburn. It's the first telephone company established in the Coeburn and Nickelsville region. The pages show blotches indicating wetness at some time. The 13 pages in the document are historical and had a red cover. They are enlarged for this reprint. The telephone company was established in 1901 and has a list of stockholders. Most of the towns are in Scott County but some in Russell and Wise County.

This narrative by Bill Porter to help celebrate the many years of Coeburn High School; which spanned over 100 years before being renamed "Eastside", is a memorial and tribute to all of those who had connections to Coeburn High School.

While researching some family history, the author discovered that his great-great grandfather, Alexander Cantrell (also spelled Cantrail), served with Company H of the 50th Virginia Infantry Regiment, CSA. The information contained in this book is provided on behalf of present day Wise Countians whose ancestor(s) served in either this same unit or Company A of the 51st Virginia. A roster of each is included.
